Pixel 10a vs iPhone 17e: which cheap phone is the better buy?

September 15, 2026 · 5 min read · PhoneHub

Both companies now sell a "cheap" phone for real money: the Pixel 10a is $499 and the iPhone 17e is $599. Both came out in March. Here's what the $100 buys, what it doesn't, and which one we'd hand to a family member — from a shop that fixes both every week.

The two phones, side by side

  • Pixel 10a — $499, 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED, Tensor G4, 8GB RAM, 5,100 mAh battery, 23W wired charging, 48MP main + 13MP ultrawide, IP68, seven years of updates.
  • iPhone 17e — $599, 6.1-inch OLED (60Hz), A19 chip, 48MP main with a 2x crop, MagSafe at 15W, 50% charge in about 30 minutes, starts at 256GB, Ceramic Shield 2 front glass.

The honest one-liner: the Pixel gives you the bigger, smoother screen and the bigger battery for less money. The iPhone gives you the faster chip, MagSafe, and the iPhone ecosystem, and starts at 256GB where the Pixel starts at 128GB.

Where the Pixel wins

Screen. 120Hz against 60Hz is the difference you notice every single day, scrolling anything. Apple still holds 120Hz back for the pricier iPhones, and on a phone you'll look at for four hours a day that's a real gap.

Battery. 5,100 mAh is a lot of battery for a phone this price. The 17e is fine, and charges fast, but the Pixel simply lasts longer.

Support. Seven years of Android updates puts the 10a on the same footing as a flagship. Apple doesn't publish a number, but iPhones typically get six or seven years too — so call this even, and both are excellent.

Where the iPhone wins

Speed. The A19 is the same family of chip as the iPhone 17, and it's a lot faster than the Tensor G4 — which is last year's Pixel chip. You won't feel it scrolling, but you will in games and in three years' time.

Storage. 256GB standard. The $499 Pixel is 128GB; the 256GB Pixel is closer to the iPhone's price, which narrows the gap.

MagSafe and accessories. Magnetic chargers, wallets, car mounts. Small thing, adds up.

Resale. iPhones hold value better. We buy both over the counter, and a two-year-old iPhone is worth noticeably more than a two-year-old Pixel.

What breaks, and what it costs

This is the part nobody puts in the reviews.

  • Screens. Both are OLED, so a cracked screen isn't a cheap glass swap on either. The iPhone's Ceramic Shield 2 is tougher glass; the Pixel's Gorilla Glass 7i is a step up from the 9a but not in the same league. Put a case and tempered glass on either one.
  • Batteries. Both are a normal battery job for us after two or three years. The Pixel's bigger cell will take longer to get there.
  • Charging ports. Both USB-C. Mostly we clean lint out; occasionally we replace the board.
  • Back glass. Both are glass-backed and both crack. Neither is a fun repair.

One thing to know about the iPhone: replacing the screen or battery with anything other than an Apple part triggers a message in Settings, and Face ID has to be handled carefully. We do it every day, but it's a more delicate job than the Pixel's. Every repair we do is covered for 30 days either way.

Which one?

Buy the Pixel 10a if you're not tied to Apple, you want the best screen and battery for the money, and you're fine with 128GB or will pay for 256GB.

Buy the iPhone 17e if you already live in iMessage and iCloud, if you'll keep it five years, or if resale value matters to you. The extra $100 is mostly buying the chip and the storage.

And if your current phone just has a cracked screen or a tired battery, price the repair before you spend $500 or $600. It's usually a fraction of that and done while you wait. We'll also tell you what your old phone is worth if you do decide to upgrade.
